Peele Chawal (Turmeric Rice w/Green Peas)

If there is one dish from my childhood that I could live by, it is this. This is my comfort food. I eat it with just about any chutney/chili sauce I can find in the fridge, especially this Hari (green) Chutney , which I always have at hand or this Raita that's a quick fix as well. It is simple, easy to make and covers the basics.

 Turmeric Rice w/Peas

Preparation: The time it takes your rice cooker to cook rice.

Serves : 2 adults but kids love it too, so I would make some extra.

Ingredients:

  • 1 tbsp Ghee
  • 1 tsp Cumin Seeds
  • pinch of Asafetida (optional)
  • 1 cup Rice (rinsed clean)
  • 1/2 tsp Turmeric powder.
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1 & 1/2 cup water
  • 1/2 cup Frozen Peas.

Heat the Ghee in a pan, add the asafetida (if using) & the Cumin seeds, let it crackle for 30 seconds. Add the rice, turmeric and salt. Stir well to combine. Let the rice toast just a bit to release it's nuttiness. Then transfer this to a rice cooker and add the water. At this point you can choose to add the peas as well, they'll be a bit mushy when cooked but if you are like me and prefer nice looking green peas studding the golden yellow rice, you'll wait till the end. Once the rice cooker timer goes off, I quickly add the peas, stir the rice with chopsticks so as to avoid breaking the grains and shut the lid for another 5 mins. The heat and steam will cook the peas just right and still look bright and green. Serve warm with Raita, green chutney or just mix the two together and you have a Green Raita! It's delicious!
